1901 :
- Casagemas, disappointed in love, commits suicide in Paris.
- Back in Paris, Picasso moves into Casagemas’s former studio: 130 bld Clichy.
- Starts signing his Paintings with his mother’s name: PICASSO. But also signs P.Ruiz Picasso or P.R Picasso.
- Meets Max Jacob at an exhibition at Galerie Vollard.
- The Blue Period starts in the autumn.
1902 :
- Breach of the contract with Manach, goes back to Barcelona where he find a studio 6 calle Nueva (now Calle Conde del Asalto).
- Exhibitions at the Berthe Weill gallery in Paris.
- Meets Julio Gonzalez with whom he will make metal sculptures at the end of the 20’s and 30’s.
- Back in Paris, shares Max Jacob’s room, boulevard Voltaire.
1903 :
- New return to Barcelona, where he spends nearly the entire year.
- Studios: Riera de San Juan then 28 calle del Comercio.
1904:
- Picasso settles definitively in Paris, at Bateau-Lavoir, 13 rue de Ravignan in Montmartre Finds in the Parisian café Le Lapin Agile in Montmartre the atmosphere of Els 4 Gats, and there meets with poets Apollinaire and Salmon, and art dealer Uhde.
- Discovers the Medrano circus and its bohemian world. .
- Brief liaison with a model, Madeleine;
- Meet Fernande Olivier also a model, who moves in with him in Montmartre/
- Last exhibition at the Berthe Weill gallery.
1905 :
- First critical review about Picasso by Apollinaire in the magazine La Plume.
- New cafe, new encounters: the Closerie des Lilas in Montparnasse.
- Trip to Schoorl, Holland.
- First engravings.
- Discovers the Ingres retrospective at the Salon d’Automne where the “Fauves” scandalize.
- In the autumn, meets American collectors Gertrude and Leo Stein and the Russian Shchukin.
- In the Louvre, sees the exhibition of Pre Roman Iberian sculptures of Osuna and Cerro de los Santos.
1906 :
- Picasso meets Matisse and Derain.
- First important sale of paintings to art dealer Ambroise Vollard for 2000 gold francs.
- Travels to Barcelona and Gosol with Fernande during the summer.
- End of August: Picasso finishes portrait of Gertrude Stein interrupted since spring: beginning of cubism.
- October: Death of Cezanne while some of his oil paintings are shown at the Autumn salon.
1907 :
- Buys two Iberian stone heads trough Apollinaire.
- Discovers the collections of African art at the Trocadero Museum. Makes some wood sculptures inspired by this archaism.
- Apollinaire introduces him to Braque.
- Picasso paint “Les demoiselles d’Avignon”, preceded by numerous sketches. Cubism is born. Picasso is 26 years old.
- The art dealer Kahnweiler becomes his friend and dealer Cezanne retrospective at the Autumn Salon.
1908 :
- Stays with Fernande at La-Rue-Des-Bois, North of Paris.
- The word “Cubism” is launched by art critic Louis Vauxcelles in magazine “Gil Blas” in a review of a Braque exhibition at Galerie Kahnweiler.
- Autumn: Picasso gives a banquet at the Douanier Rousseau.
- In the winter, beginning of an intense collaboration and close friendship with Braque which will give birth first to Analytic Cubism and then to Synthetic Cubism.
1909 :
- Stays in Barcelona during the summer then returns with Fernande to Horta de Ebro (today Horta de San Juan) at home of his friend Pallares.
- After the summer, moves into a new studio, 11 bld de Clichy
1910 :
- Cubist portraits of art dealers Vollard, Kanhnweiler and Uhde.
- Summer in Barcelona, then in Cadaquès with Derain and his wife.
- Picasso illustrates “Saint Matorel” by Max Jacob.
- Exhibition at Galerie Vollard during winter.
